CNN covered the news at five p.m. as soon as the last vote was passed in the House.

“We have been covering the vice-presidential nomination battle in the House all day. The vote is just now nearing its finale. As you no doubt know, Attorney General Rowan was a controversial choice—not because of her politics or from any scandal, but because she is so unknown. Our polls indicated that less than twenty-five percent of those polled knew that she was the attorney general. Only four percent could recall any other details of her career—that she was head of the Federal Prison System, before that the director of the most secure prison in the country, and before that a federal prosecutor. Let’s look at the results as they come in.”

The anchorman looked away to the House vote tally board as the numbers of nays and yeas continued to vacillate.

“It’s still unclear whether or not the members of Congress will accept this nearly unknown woman whom many describe as inexperienced and unable to take a stand on issues confronting the country. This stems from her adamant refusal to grant interviews on political questions. The nearest this reporter has come to getting an answer is that Mrs. Rowan assured me that she supports the president. We could surmise that she is a liberal Democrat from that, but I don’t think all the data is in on this quiet—and by most associates’ observations—effective, middle level administrator.”

The vote tally edged in Mrs. Rowan’s favor with thirty-two votes left to be cast in the alphabetical order passing through the House members’ names. Ayes and nays continued to be coming at about the same rate, but now the ayes outnumbered the nays by three.

“As you know, the Senate confirmed her by a vote of 49 to 51, a squeaker. The House vote is looking like it will be a photo finish as well This has to be a near record which is indicative of the deep interest Congress has. Every member of the Senate was present for the vote, and every single member of the House is on the floor today. I don’t remember ever seeing perfect attendance before.”

The vote was a tie with three votes left.

The speaker of the House called out, “Mr. Young?”

“Aye.”

“Mr. Zelkoff?”

“Nay.”

“Ms. Zybgniew?”

The representative from Chicago’s Polish neighborhoods paused for full effect because she was well aware of the crucial character of her vote. She was somewhat torn having had a nasty run-in with the attorney general over a fraud case involving her chief contributor’s work on the federal courthouse in her district. On the other hand, she could cast the vote that would put the first woman vice-president in office. It would be a stroke for the sisterhood that should transcend her petty grievance. Sofia Zybgniew was truly torn.

“Ms Zybgniew?”

“Aye.”

The vote board showed 218 ayes to 217 nays. The gallery erupted in applause.

The CNN anchor said, “This is an historic day, ladies and gentlemen. We have all just seen the approval
